Shanghai Xiangming High School was founded in 1902 by the renowned patriotic educator Mr. Ma Xiangbo. The school was renamed Xiangming High School in 1952 and was accredited as a key high school of Shanghai Municipality in 1959. In 2005, the school made the list of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission’s first group of Experimental and Exemplary High Schools of Shanghai Municipality. Since the 1980s, the school has been practicing creative education with a goal to re-invent education, putting forth its educational philosophy of “staying focused on students’ sustainable development and enabling individual growth with creative practices” and “fulfilling aspirations with creativity”. At the heart of its featured creative curriculum is a clear focus on the “foundation+strengths→creativity” construct. Following its school motto of “Be Enlightened and Aim High”, the school stays committed to a central mission of education by cultivating creativity and fostering a creative school culture that nurtures the students’ growth in terms of their ability to think, work and create independently and their willingness to care for and forgive other people and take responsibility. Nationally and internationally, the school has been a proud recipient of dozens of honors and titles including “National Civilized Campus”, “National Civilized Organization”, “National Advanced Institution of the Education System”, “National Advanced Experimental Center for Creative Education”, “Top 10 Science and Technology Innovation School of the Nation”, “International Eco-School” and “World Youth Invention Center”, to name just a few. In September 2009, the school’s Pujiang Campus with boarding facilities was inaugurated, expanding the school’s ability to operate on both sides of the Huangpu River. In 2016, the school opened up new spaces for extracurricular and sports activities with the inauguration of the underground sports center of the Luwan Campus and the underground passageway connecting the two parts of the campus previously divided by Ruijin No. 1 Road. In the same year, Xiangming Education Group was founded with a mission to share the school’s creative education philosophy and practices with sister schools. A number of new buildings to house innovative educational experiments are currently under construction, adding to the school’s efforts in building high-standard facilities including basketball courts, tennis courts, swimming pools, bowling alleys, billiard halls and so on. Students’ creativity and independent growth and the school’s inner-strength-based development and faculty development have always been the school’s top priorities. The school’s re-invented library, now known as the Aurora Hall of Books, and the creation of the “Future Classrooms” are testaments to the school’s efforts to build a creative culture and train innovative talents for the future with its structured curriculum, crowd-sourced faculty and new platforms.
