From August 15 to 17, the Delegation of Educators of Huangpu District attended the 14th Singapore-Shanghai Basic Education Roundtable Forum. Under the theme of “Nurturing the Whole Child - Enabling Holistic Education”, this forum was organized by the Singapore Ministry of Education and Shanghai Education Commission, and was undertaken by Singapore Ministry of Education Schools Division, Schools Branch North.
Ms. LOW Yoke Kiew, head of Singapore Ministry of Education Schools Division, Schools Branch North, delivered a welcoming remark on behalf of the hosts. Mr. ZHANG Ruitian, deputy director of Huangpu District Education Bureau and head of Delegation of Educators of Huangpu District made a responding remark on behalf of the guests.
Both parties agree that the Singapore-Shanghai Basic Education Roundtable Forum, since its launching, has made positive impacts and exerted profound influences on the effort of Singapore and Shanghai in promoting the development of basic education. This is the first time in the recent years that this forum was brought back offline, making such face-to-face communication and exchange opportunities even more precious. Later on, Mr. TAY Yuan Zhuang, vice principal of Hougang Secondary School chaired the forum.
The Singapore and Shanghai parties conducted brilliant discussions around the heated topic of education, “Nurturing the Whole Child - Enabling Holistic Education”.
Focusing on “Based on Value, Prioritizing Passion and Motivated by Innovation” Mr. POH Chun Leck, principal of Catholic High School of Singapore introduced the evolution of the Singapore education system and the policy outline as well as school-based practices of the key project, “Systematic Development of Students’ Comprehensive Qualities”.
Mr. WU Zhao, principal of Gezhi High School Shanghai made a presentation entitled “Promoting Students’ Comprehensive Quality Elevation by Implementing the ‘Two News’”. He shared information about the a series of practices and explorations of Gezhi High School against the backdrop of “Two News” to elevate students’ comprehensive qualities, including the designing of graduates’ images, the compiling of implementation plans for the school curriculum, the carrying out of comprehensive quality evaluation and the improving of career instruction mechanism.
Ms. FOO Mui Chuw, Principal of Chongfu School of Singapore, made a report entitled “When ‘Accomplishment’ Is No Longer Dependant on Test Scores”, introducing the cultivation targets, vision, mission, core value and distinctive culture of Chongfu: “Caring, Innovation and Excellence”.
Principal YU Yiling of Shanghai Normal University Demonstration Primary School, Luwan delivered a speech entitled “Perfecting Moral Standards and Unleashing Potential: School-based Actions Targeted at the Cultivation of Innovative Qualities” in which she introduced the series of effective school-based actions carried out by her school, including “Holistic Curriculum Planning”, “Research and Development of Classroom Observation Measuring Gauges”, “Curriculum Optimization Featuring ‘Convergence and Innovation’” and “Building of School Supporting System”.
The enlightening themed sharing sessions by the four principals aroused strong resonance among the participants of the forum. Then, Dr. NG Pak Tee of Singapore Nanyang Technological University, National Institute of Education, Singapore discussed topics including how the current age of artificial intelligence re-positioned the methods of innovation and talent cultivation, marking a perfect finishing touch to the discussions.
Mrs. Becky Neo, School Cluster Superintendent of Singapore Ministry of Education Schools Division, Schools Branch North made the closing remark.
The delegation also visited 7 schools of Singapore, enhancing their understanding of the basic education of Singapore.
